Amboseli and Tsavo Safari Packages: Elephants, Kilimanjaro and Red Earth
By the Africa Safaris team, Nairobi · · 3 min read
Amboseli and Tsavo safari packages explained: Kilimanjaro views, big elephant herds, Tsavo's red elephants, Mombasa or Nairobi starts, budget options and prices.
If elephants are on your wish list, southern Kenya delivers. Amboseli is famous for big-tusked elephants walking beneath Mount Kilimanjaro. Neighbouring Tsavo East and Tsavo West together make up one of Africa's largest protected areas, where elephants are dusted red by the earth. Here's how to plan Amboseli and Tsavo safari packages.
Amboseli National Park
- Kilimanjaro views: Africa's highest mountain rises just across the Tanzanian border. Clear views come most often early in the morning.
- Elephants: Amboseli's herds are among the most studied in the world, and you can get close to families on the swamps.
- Getting there: about 4–5 hours by road from Nairobi, or a short flight.
Tsavo East and Tsavo West
- Tsavo East: open, flat and wild, with the famous red elephants, the Galana River and the Lugard Falls.
- Tsavo West: volcanic hills, Mzima Springs and dramatic scenery.
- Getting there: Tsavo sits between Nairobi and the coast, so it's ideal if you're starting or ending in Mombasa or Diani.
Popular routes
- Nairobi to Mombasa via Amboseli and Tsavo East: the 4-Day Amboseli & Tsavo East Budget Safari runs from about $1,040 per person and finishes at the coast.
- Classic Kenya: Amboseli combined with the Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru. See the 6-Day Kenya Classic.
- Beach first, safari second: guests holidaying in Diani or Mombasa can add a 2–3 day Tsavo safari. Ask us for coast pick-ups.
Is it good value?
Yes. Amboseli and Tsavo are often less expensive than the Masai Mara, with lower park fees and a wide range of camps. That makes them a favourite for budget Kenya safaris and family trips.
Best time to visit
Game viewing is best in the dry seasons, June to October and January to February, when animals gather around permanent water. Kilimanjaro is often clearest after rain, so the green season can bring spectacular mountain views.
Combine with the beach
Tsavo's position makes it the natural bridge between a safari and the Indian Ocean. Finish your trip on Diani Beach with white sand and snorkelling at Wasini Island. Read our honeymoon safari and beach guide.

Frequently asked questions
Can you see Kilimanjaro from Amboseli?+
Yes. Mount Kilimanjaro dominates the skyline from Amboseli, although it's often hidden by cloud by midday. Early mornings give the best chance of a clear view.
Can I do a Tsavo safari from Mombasa or Diani?+
Yes. Tsavo East is about 2–3 hours from Mombasa, and 2–3 day safaris from the coast are very popular. Many visitors combine them with a beach holiday.
Why are Tsavo's elephants red?+
They dust-bathe in Tsavo's iron-rich red soil, which coats their skin and gives them their famous colour.
