Kenya Safari Packages from the USA: Costs, Flights and How to Book

By the Africa Safaris team, Nairobi · · 3 min read

Planning a Kenya safari from the USA? Real package prices in USD, nonstop and one-stop flights, the Kenya eTA, best months and how to book a private safari direct.

Every year more American travellers book a Kenya safari package from the USA directly with a local operator rather than through a US reseller. Booking direct means you deal with the people who actually run your safari, you see exactly what each night costs, and you avoid a second layer of margin. This guide covers what a Kenya safari really costs in US dollars, how to fly there, what paperwork you need and how to book.

How much does a Kenya safari cost from the USA?

Prices for East African safaris are quoted in US dollars, so there is no currency surprise for American travellers. A private safari with your own Land Cruiser, a professional driver-guide, park fees and full-board lodges usually works out at USD 350–550 per person per day at mid-range level. Budget small-group camping safaris start around USD 200 per day, and luxury fly-in safaris run from about USD 900 to well over USD 2,000 per person per day.

Some real examples from our own safaris, per person sharing:

Flights from the USA to Nairobi

Most safaris start in Nairobi (NBO). Kenya Airways flies nonstop from New York JFK to Nairobi in roughly 15 hours. From other US cities you'll usually connect once, through Europe (Amsterdam, London, Paris), the Middle East (Doha, Dubai) or Addis Ababa. Total journey time from the West Coast is typically 22–28 hours, so many travellers add a night in Nairobi before the safari.

We include airport arrival and departure transfers on our safaris, so someone will be waiting for you whatever time you land.

Entry requirements for US citizens

  • Kenya eTA: US passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before flying. Apply online through the official Kenyan government eTA website a few weeks before travel.
  • Passport: valid for at least six months after you arrive, with blank pages.
  • Tanzania: if you combine Kenya with the Serengeti, you'll also need a Tanzania e-visa.
  • Health: talk to your doctor or a travel clinic about malaria tablets and vaccinations at least six weeks before you go. Check the current CDC guidance for Kenya.

When should Americans go?

The classic time is July to October, when the Great Migration is in the Masai Mara. It lines up neatly with US summer vacation, so book 9–12 months ahead for the best lodges. January–February is also dry and excellent, with fewer vehicles. April–May is the long rainy season, when prices drop and the landscape is green. See our guide to the best time to go on safari in Kenya.

Private safari vs group tour

Most US travellers we host choose a private safari: your own vehicle and guide, your own schedule, and the freedom to stay with a lion sighting as long as you like. Every package on our site is private unless it says "small group". Compare styles in our guides to luxury Kenya safaris and budget Kenya safaris.
